biofresh - Potato sprout supression

News - biofresh launches Transportable Ethylene Management System

12 Aug 08

biofresh has launched a new transportable ethylene unit which can be moved from store to store. The new unit gives an additional option to growers and packers who want to cut out the use of more conventional chemical sprout suppressants.

An addition to the company’s established and widely-used ethylene control systems, the new portable unit offers all the existing benefits of the fixed unit. The same state-of-the-art sensor technology is built in to the machine, so it is highly efficient at monitoring and controlling the correct volume of ethylene gas in the potato store – whatever its volume. The design incorporates an integral ethylene cylinder storage unit and the biofresh system uses 99.9% pure ethylene supplied by Air Products – meeting UK PSD directives.

Developed for any size of potato store, the unit is totally safe to use, robust and easy to maintain. biofresh Chairman, Harry Smart said: “We wanted to extend the benefits of our ethylene management system to give our customers the flexibility to move the system from one location to another. The new transportable system is self-contained and can be easily manoeuvred using a fork lift truck. It’s incredibly simple to operate – you quite literally plug and play.”

In response to growing consumer concerns regarding the use of chemical residue on potatoes, the use of ethylene in cold storage is becoming a favoured alternative to CIPC fogging. Ethylene, which occurs naturally when fruit ripens, can be used to significantly delay the sprouting of potatoes. Performance is every bit as effective as CIPC, but in natural light it degrades rapidly leaving no harmful residues.

The new transportable ethylene system is backed by biofresh customer service, maintenance and back up. For further information, call the technical team on 0845 603 5007.
