The Pesticides Safety Directorate has approved the use of ethylene here in the UK by granting what is known as Commodity Substance Approval
The use of ethylene in other member states of the EU is governed by individual national regulations.
The EC is currently reviewing the licensing of all pesticide active ingredients under the terms of Council Directive 91/414/EEC.
An application has been made to include ethylene in this review on an approved substance list known as Annex 1.
If successful national approval for the use of ethylene can be sought in each
of the member states - including the UK.
Or, the Directive may be revised to include a ‘Commodity Substance’ category – like the existing UK system.
It is expected that EU – wide Regulations will be in place by 2009/10. In the meantime the UK Commodity Substance Approval regulations remain in place.
