News - Ethylene regulations - at a glance

06 Mar 08

  • The Pesticides Safety Directorate has approved the use of ethylene here in the UK by granting what is known as Commodity Substance Approval
  • The use of ethylene in other member states of the EU is governed by individual national regulations.
  • The EC is currently reviewing the licensing of all pesticide active ingredients under the terms of Council Directive 91/414/EEC.
  • An application has been made to include ethylene in this review on an approved substance list known as Annex 1.
  • If successful national approval for the use of ethylene can be sought in each
of the member states - including the UK.
  • Or, the Directive may be revised to include a ‘Commodity Substance’ category – like the existing UK system.
  • It is expected that EU – wide Regulations will be in place by 2009/10. In the meantime the UK Commodity Substance Approval regulations remain in place.
